From the editor's desk

We started with the hum because everyone has heard it and almost nobody has looked at where it comes from. Walk to the end of any street and there it is: a fenced yard of porcelain and steel, humming to itself, feeding everything you own. This issue spends ninety six pages inside that fence. Nothing in here is spectacular. All of it is load bearing.
